The Wayfarer’s axe
An imagined artifact, the Wayfarer’s axe blends a walking stick with a hatchet. The blade is adorned with a poem “Better burden may no man bear, for wandering wide than wisdom fair. Better than wealth in unknown ways, a refuge in grief for all you days”, a lightly edited version of Stanza 10 from Hávamál. The centre of the eye is engraved with a symbol that could be interpreted as a compass, the sun or a star. The butt features a dragon head.
The main feature of this axe is the detachable handle. While extended, the haft is 127cm long to act as a walking stick. However, when collapsed the hatchet part measures roughly 60cm and the bottom part about 69cm, both for easy storage when not in use and practicality of the axe head. The tip of the stick is also reinforced with a hardened steel bit. The blade is protected with a wooden sheath, which is secured with a pin on a little chain.
Since I wanted to make sure the item withstands use over a lifetime, the fittings (thread and nut) are made with a special screw, as well as riveted into both the axe part and the bottom part of the handle. The joint is also plated over, to ensure a truly secure and long lasting fit.
The whole object weighs 930 grams, axe is forge welded from wrought iron and steel, haft is ash.
